A container holds 500. mL of CO2 at 20 degrees C and 742 torr. What will be the volume of the CO2 if the pressure is increased to 795 torr?
Volume of CO2 =V1 = 500 mL
=
=0.500 L
Temperature = 20 oC
Pressure = P1 =742 torr = 0.976 atm
=0.976 atm
Pressure of CO2 =P2 = 759 torr =
= 0.999 atm
We have to use Boyle's law assuming CO2 is a ideal gas
Formula for Boyle's law
P1V1 = P2V2
0.976 atm (0.500 L) = 0.999 atm (V2)
0.488 = 0.999 *V2
Divide both sides by 0.999
0.488 L = V2
New volume of CO2 = V2 = 488 mL
