Answer. Blood is a vascular connective tissue in human body. The formed elements in it includes the:

  1. Erythrocytes or the Red blood corpuscles: These are the biconcave enucleated cells. They contain an iron containing pigment called haemoglobin. It helps in binding to oxygen and promotes its transport and bringing tissue respiration. They are synthesised in the bone marrow and has lifespan of 90-120 days.
  2. Leucocytes or the White blood corpuscles or WBCs: These act as the soldiers in the body and helps in protecting us against the pathogens. They can be granulocytes or non-granulocytes. Granulocytes can be basophils, eosinophils and neutrophils. Agranulocytes includes lymphocytes and the monocytes. All these cells of the leucocytes helps in maintaining the defense mechanism of the body against the pathogens. Through haemopoiesis blood components are synthesised in the bone marrow.
  3. Platelets or thromocytes: These cells of the blood helps in the clotting process through the various clotting factors present in blood.
