Why is activated Vitamin D3 essential for Hemodialysis patients?
Activated vitamin D is a cornerstone for the prevention and treatment of hyperthyroidism in patients on dialysis.Vitamin D works by directly inhibiting the production and release of PTH from the parathyroid glands as well as increasing serum calcium levels by stimulating calcium absorption from the gut.
Vitamin D deficiency is common in patient with chronic kidney disease including patients on dialysis.25-hydroxyvitamin D may have important roles due to ability of extrarenal tissues to convert 25 hydroxyvitamin D into active form or 1,25dihydroxyvitaminD
Vitamin D, calcium , phosphorus and parathyroid have connection.Healthy kidneys are rich with vitamin D receptors and play a major role in turnind vitamin D into its active form Excess of PTH can cause secondary hyperthyroidism which can result in bone pain and weak bones that fracture easily.Vitamn D is essential for chronic kidney patients and patients with dialysis because vitamin D helps to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus and helps promote calcium absoption which important for strong bones.Vitamin D is essential in dialysis patients because they have low intake of calcium due to avoidance of foods containing phosphorus and potassium.
