The Instructor will assign ten (10) drug cards per week, in specific areas. Each card will be worth 1 point. You will not receive the points for the cards if they are not submitted within the week when due.

Pharmacological classification: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI)
Therapeutic classification: antidepressants
Action:SSRI antidepressants are a type of antidepressant that work by increasing levels of serotonin within the brain.Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is often referred to as the “feel good hormone”. It carries messages between brain cells and contributes to well-being, good mood, appetite, as well as helping to regulate the body’s sleep-wake cycle and internal clock.
Indications: Anxiety,stress, depression, postpartum depression.
Contraindications:bleeding or blood clotting disorder,liver or kidney disease,narrow-angle glaucoma,seizure or epilepsy,Heart disease,bipolar disorder.
Side effects:drowsiness, ejaculatory disorder, nausea, insomnia, and diaphoresis ,suicidal tendencies, agitation, diarrhea, impotence, sinusitis, anxiety, confusion, exacerbation of depression, lack of concentration, tremor, vomiting, anorexia, and xerostomia.
Dose:20 mg once daily
Nursing implications:1)do not give it with MAO inhibitor.
2)patient may have suicidal tendency so always stay alert
3) worsening of symptoms should be referred to doctor.
2.REMERON
Brand name:Remeron
Generic name:Mirtazapine
Classification: Antidepressants
Action:not fully understood
Indications: anxiety, stress, depression
Contraindications:low WBC count,glaucoma,liver or kidney disease.
Side effects:severe sedation, constipation, drowsiness, increased serum cholesterol, weight gain, fatigue, insomnia, increased appetite, xerostomia, and decreased appetite,dizziness, increased serum triglycerides, tremor, dyspepsia,
Dose:15 mg/day
Nursing implications:1)Do not give with MAO inhibitor
2) patient may have suicidal tendency so always stay alert
3) worsening of symptoms should be referred to doctor.
