It is estimated that lack of physical activity is responsible for one third of deaths due to coronary heart disease.

Physical activity is associated with decreased mortality in men and women, middle aged and older individuals.

A relatively increased risk of death was found in people with sedentary occupations as compared to those with active occupations.

Physical activity improves the endothelial function by enhancing vasodilatation and vasomotor function.

Physical activity contributes to weight loss, glycemic control, improved blood pressure, lipid profile and insulin sensitivity, it also elevates the mood. The benefits to cardiovascular health are mediated through these effects.

Depression is highly prevalent among individuals with coronary heart disease. Coronary heart disease patients with depressive symptoms experience poorer behavioural, clinical and psychological outcomes, including increased chance of morbidity and mortality as compared to those who are not depressed.

It leads to an unhealthy lifestyle and poor adherence to treatment.
