Coronary heart disease is due to blockages occuring in the coronary arteries that supply blood to heart muscle. The blood carries with it , O2 and nutrients so that energy can be produced for the heart muscle to contract. Any blockages can lead to lack of blood supply to heart muscle.. In such a case, heart muscle will suffer from lack of energy and fail to function normally. It can lead to a condition called heart attack which is life threatening.

Blockages occur due excess fat intake especially saturated fats containing cholesterol. Lack of proper exercise, stress , cigarette smoking etc ,can also add to the faster progression of the disease.

Life expectancy is increasing with more medical treatments available for diseases. So there are more elderly present in many countries including Australia. CVD are leading cause of hospitalization in Australia and also most costly.

More investment in prevention and research is critical to identify those at risk of the disease earlier so that they are treated and hospitalizations costs will be lower. With more patients as the age of the population increases, there will be more burden in hospitals.

Government should develop policies to reduce CVD in population. Such policy should include:

Fat taxation.

Sugar taxation

Smoking taxation.

More funding for research for early detection and treatment

Insentives to exercise and eat healthy

Coronary heart disease is caused by a buildup of plaque in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. When the flow of blood to the heart is restricted or blocked, the heart can be damaged due to a lack of oxygen. Further, if a large piece of plaque buildup gets dislodged from an artery wall, it can get stuck in other arteries throughout the body, including arteries in the brain. For simplicity, let's assume that the artery is cylindrical...
