MEDICAL MANAGEMENT OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE :

OPIOD ABUSE :

  • Naltrexone : It is the drug of choice because of minimal side effects
  • Lack of addiction
  • Ease of administration
  • It act by blocking the activation of opiod receptors in the brain
  • Naloxone is an antidote to opiod overdose and it actively reverse the narcotic effects of opiod agonist drugs.
  • Beclofen:Used to treat muscle spasticity and used as maintenance drug for opiod dependence.

ALCOHOL ABUSE :

  • Vivitrol : Injectable form of Naltrexone.It is administered via injection once a month
  • Disulfiram :It acts by blocking the activity of enzymes which are useful for ethanol metabolism.
  • Acamprosate: It protects the brain from over excitation which occurs due to withdrawl of alcohol by disrupting the excitatory and inhibitory signals- which can promote abstinence of alcohol.
  • Gabapentine :Reduces alcohol withdrawl symptoms.

COCAINE ABUSE :

  • Modafinil :It is CNS stimulant and promotes alertness.Used in cocaine dependence.
  • Carbamazepine : It is anticonvulsant.

NICOTINE ABUSE :

  • Bupropion:It is norepinephrine- dopamine reuptake inhibitor antidepressent.
  • Used in cessation of smoking.
