Compare operating databases or online transaction processing (OLTP) systems with online analytical processing (OLAP) systems. Also, discuss the main application of each system.
Online transaction processing (OLTP) involves gathering input
information, processing the data and updating existing data to
reflect the collected and processed information. As of today, most
organizations use a database management system to support OLTP.
OLTP is carried in a client-server system.
Typical applications of OLAP include business reporting for sales,
marketing, management reporting, business process management
(BPM),budgeting and forecasting, financial reporting and similar
areas, with new applications coming up, such as agriculture.
