Development of a child ( at 18 months):
Growth of a child refers to increase in size and is quantitative in nature but where the Development of a child refers to the overall changes and progress, that will be qualitative in nature. Parents can witness a number of changes in the child's early years especially first 2 years. The important developmental changes and milestones are follows :
* Physical development
At 18 months, the baby :
- walks and runs
- climb up stairs with support
- take off some cothes
- Pick up balls and throw it
- starts scribbling with crayons
* Socio emotional development: Socio emotional development is very evident at 18 months,
- Shows angry and tantrums
- Shows affection and gives kisses
- Plays along side of other children and also engage in pretend play
* Language development and literacy
- Child can tell a 10 to 15 words
- Child can point out some of the body parts ( nose , eyes, ears etc.) When asking to show
- can follow commands with one step. Eg: come here , take your toy..etc.
* Number sense
A child at 18 months, can count upto 5 to six and tries to count more.
Parents and teachers role in development of the child:
Parents play an important role in the Development of the child as they are the first role model of the child. A baby is learning from his parents alone from his early years. Parents has to encourage and motivate their child, whenever he or she is showing a positive development or learning. Eg: When the child starts to walk, parents have to encourage to walk more or support them to walk. They have to be responsive and should have a caring and loving nature towards their child. Children can learn many things and acquire skills, if the parents are encouraging and understanding them. Parents has to identify the different potentials in their child and should help the child to develop it.
Role of teachers:
Teachers has a great role in moulding a child's personality,after parents. They can help the child's development considerably from the preschool period itself.
* Teachers should motivate the child to learn new things.
* They have to arouse the child's interest for learning
* They have to nurture learning and facilitate the learning environment for the child .
* Help the child to face the challenges of the world by providing him various experiences
* Make the classroom a comfortable Environment for the child.
* Teachers should be open minded, impartial, loving towards the youmg children so that influence the child's development positively.
* Teachers can identify the child's special abilities and nurture it.
