Components of SBAR and Professional communication:
SBAR is a tecnique or a communication model, that used to enhance appropriate and immediate communication. This communication model is mainly used by Physicians and Nurses.
In SBAR Communication model:
S: Situation
B: Background
A: Assessment
R: Recommendation
Situation: Brief and clear description regarding current scenario or situation.
Example: Mr. X is having the complaints of chest pain and Increased breathing difficulty.
Background : Patient's background and reasons for admission in clear and precise sentences.
Example: Mr. X was diagnosed with Hypertension, five years ago, and under treatment. But he is no maintaining the drug regimen, he told. He is obese . Morning he woke up with Chest pain and Increased breathing difficulty. He got admitted to Emergency at 10 AM. His Vital signs are...
Assessment : Based on the situation and background, physician or the nurse can give/ write a professional statement.
Example: " My assessment is that he may have a Cardiac event".
Recommendations: In a clear and relevant way, one can express what he or she needs from the person, with whom you are communicating.
Example: " I need / recommend you to come and visit him immediately , that we starts an oxygenation to him as he is having dyspnoea .
Professional communication:
The major components of professional communication are source of message, message, channel, feedback , medium or the environment etc. There are special Components for therapeutic professional communication ( Nurse - patient, physician- patient), such as:
* Empathy
* genuineness
* warmth
* trust
* Confidentiality
* Self awareness and use of self
* honesty
* Respect for the values and beliefs of the patient.
Non judgemental attitude and positive regard for the patient.
