A clarinet is basically sealed at one end (you blow into a very narrow hole), but open at the other. A flute is open at both ends. If you have a clarinet and flute of equal lengths, and play the fundamental

a. The flute will sound lower.

b. The clarinet will sound lower.

c. They will have identical pitch.

d. Not enough information.

Clarinet is a closed pipe of length L( say). The clarinet can support only those vibrations for which the closed end is a node while the open end it is an antinode. For fundamental there are one node and one antinode. If fundamental frequency is f1 and corresponding wavelength 1 then 1 =4* L.

And f1 = V/1 = V/(4*L).

Flute is a open pipe of same length L. The flute can support only those waves for which antinodes are produced at both of its open end. For fundamental there are two antinodes and one node. If fundamental frequency is f and corresponding wavelength then = 2*L.

And f = V/ = V/(2*L).

So, f = 2* f1 i.e. fundamental frequency of flute is double of the fundamental frequency of the clarinet of same length. So, clarinet have lower sound.

Ans) b. The clarinet will sound lower.

You are in a spaceship making measurements very close to a black hole. A partner's spaceship is orbiting the black hole at a much larger radius. Your partner sends messages to you using visible light pulses from a laser. When you receive the messages, do you expect to detect radio waves or gamma waves? Why? The answer is gamma waves, but I don't understand.

You are going to apply a very popular investment strategy with options called a straddle. Basically, you buy a call option and a put option for the same stock and the same maturity that are as close as possible to being at the money (stock and strike price very close to each other). First, use the information given in the spreadsheet to create the payoffs in dollars. The payoff diagram will fill in as you put in payoffs. Second, go...

One end of a very long wire is rigidly fastened to a post. The other end is attached to an audio speaker which shakes the end of the wire in a direction perpendicular to its length. The wire has a diameter 1.1 mm , a volume mass density of 7800 kg/m3, and is held under a tension of 6.7 N. The speaker creates a wave on the wire with an amplitude 0.56 cm and a frequency of 65.0 Hz ....

Normally, the pH of the human body is fixed in a very narrow range between 7.35 and 7.45. A patient with an acidotic blood pH of 7.3 may be treated with an alkali such as sodium hydrogen carbonate. Why would this treatment raise the pH of the blood?

Consider a beam of electrons in a vacuum, passing through a very narrow slit of width 2.00?m. The electrons then head toward an array of detectors a distance 1.080m away. These detectors indicate a diffraction pattern, with a broad maximum of electron intensity (i.e., the number of electrons received in a certain area over a certain period of time) with minima of electron intensity on either side, spaced 0.508cm from the center of the pattern. What is the wavelength ?...

In some natural systems the pH must be maintained within very narrow limits. For example, in human blood the pH must remain close to 7.4 or cell deterioration occurs. Blood contains several weak acid/conjugate base equilibria called buffers which control the pH. One weak acid present in blood is the dihydrogen phosphate ion, H2PO4-1 for which the equilibrium in aqueous solution is: H2PO4-1(aq) <---------> HPO4-2(aq) + H+1(aq) 0.50 mol H2PO4-1 and 0.50 mol HPO4-2 are in equilibrium in 1L of...
