Cultural and traditional practices influence many ways in the postpartum mothers and the care for new borns. Some of the practices followed are:
1 .First bath of the baby by adding 40 stones or placing a needle to bath water of the baby.
2.Not cutting the first nail of the baby until the baby was 40 days old.
3 . Swaddling
4. Removal of umbilical cord.
5. Evil eye.
6. Wrapping babies with yellow fabric or using lamps with yellow light etcetera incase of jaundice.
Therefore, the cultural beliefs of the family as well as the lack of knowledge of the mother's may defenitely affect the physical, social, phycological development and health of the child.
Lactogenesis is the process of developing the ability to secret milk and involves the maturation of alveolar cells. It takes place in three stages.
STAGE 1 : This phase begins around week 16 in pregnancy and is the stage in which colostrum begins to be created.
STAGE 2 : In this phase the secretion of copious milk flows the hormonal shift triggered by birth and the placental delivery and typically occurs around day 4 of postpartum.
STAGE 3 : This phase is when the milk supply is maintained via autocrain control from around day 10 postpartum until weaning begins.
Women with diabetes needs special care during pregnancy to prevent problems. Controlling blood sugar can prevent many problems. A nurse can carefully monitor the infant in the first hours and days after birth. This may prevent health problems due to blood sugar . Moreover, a nurse can educate the mother to eat nutritious diet ,doing regulare exercise and about taking proper medication.
