Nurses play an important role in administering medication to patients depending on the situation in which they work so it is important to have a pharmaceutical knowledge for nurses in there carrier.
If we have pharmaceutical knowledge we will know things such as
1) RIGHT DRUG - we would know if the drug is related to patient clinical condition and checking the expiry date
2) RIGHT PATIENT - we would know whether the drug has any side effects on patient
3) RIGHT DOSAGE - we would know the right dosage to be administered to tha patient
4) RIGHT TIME - we would know the time of administration of drugs
5) RIGHT ROUTE - we would know the correct route of administration for the prescribed medicine
6) RIGHT DOCUMENTATION - we would know to note down the prescription as soon as administered
We would also have following advantages if we have pharmaceutical knowledge
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Drug interactions are very important when administering a medication. A drug interaction is where the active component of the medication might interfere or interact with another medication or product
For example : A patient has multiple comorbidities and is on multiple medication is on high risk of adverse effects.As a practical example interaction between clarithromycin and calcium channel blockers like Amlodipine administering this together can cause hypotension and acute renal failure and may lead to death.
Some interactions may be beneficial such as paracetamol and oxycodone, the paracetamol enhance the uptake of oxycodone making pain relief more effective.
