Second hand smoke and health outcome in children with Cystic Fibrosis :
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited condition in which the exocrine glands produce abnormally viscous mucus, causing chronic respiratory and digestive problems . Second hand smoke is the smoke from burning tobacco products such as cigars, cigarettes, pipes etc. Exposure to the second - hand smoke can cause serious problems in children with Cystic Fibrosis and also the smoking can mimic the symptoms of Cystic fibrosis by limiting the CFTR protein. The various side effects in children with Cystic Fibrosis, as a result of exposure to Second - hand smoking are :
- It can irritate nasal mucosa and lungs, causes the inflammation
- can cause reduction in Pulmonary function test and make the child to breath hard.
- increase the risk of lung and sinus infection , growth retardation and failure to gain bod weight due to laboured breathing.
* Cost effective interventions to reduce the second - hand smoke effects in children with C.F , are there in the scientific literature .
For Example:A research study conducted on to assess the Cost- effectiveness of an Intervention to reduce the effect or exposure of Second hand smoke in children with CF. Nicotine Replacement therapy ( NRT) is used as a Cost - effective intervention for reducing the exposure of the children with Cystic fibrosis. Parents or Care takers are encouraged to use the NRT and the results showed that the improved air quality in the interior of the house and it found to be a cost - effective intervention.
* Options under active considerations:
