I am discussing Emphysema.

Emphysema is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In this disease, there is permanent dilatation of airways distal to the terminal bronchioles followed by destruction of wall of air spaces. There is no fibrosis.

The main pathology behind this disease is loss of elastic recoil of lungs

There are 4 types of emphysema-

1. Centrilobar - in this, the centre of acinus is involved. It is most common among the 4 types. Main etiology is SMOKING. Predominantly upper lobe of lung is affected.

2. Panacinar- in this type, the entire acinus is involved. It is seen in young non-smokers. It is a autosomal recessive disorder in which there is deficiency of alpha 1 antitrysin. Lower lobe is affected more.

3. Paraseptal- It is commonly seen in young males. It affects pleura and margins of lobules. In this type, there is increased risk of spontaneous pneumothorax.

4. Irregular - in this type, there is no regular pattern seen.

Individuals who smoke are most susceptible to develop emphysema. Smoking and inhaled pollutants cause ongoing accumulation of inflammatory cells, releasing elastases and oxidants, which destroy the alveolar wall.

Clinical features are dyspnea, cough, increased work of breathing, hyper inflated lungs .

Choose one disease/condition that affects the respiratory system. Some examples include: cystic fibrosis, asthma, pneumonia, emphysema, lung cancer, mesothelioma, and black lung disease. Research the disease/condition that you have chosen. In your discussion post, identify the disease or condition you have chosen. Then give background information on what the disease is and what causes it. Next talk about the common symptoms. Then indicate how the condition is diagnosed (tests, procedures, etc). Next talk about treatment options and the overall prognosis...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is able to colonize the respiratory mucosa and cause recurring pneumonia in cystic fibrosis patients. The following experiments were performed to determine how P. aeruginosa can colonize mucous membranes. 0.1 mL broth culture was added to 0.4 mL serum and incubated for 1 hour; 0.1 mL of the same broth culture was added to 0.4 mL isotonic saline and incubated for 1 hour. Plate counts were performed on 1-mL samples to determine the number of bacteria. Immunoelectrophoresis was...

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a progressive genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system as well as many other organ systems. It causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs, which leads to life-threatening lung infections. Cystic fibrosis is caused by mutations in the gene that produces the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. This protein is responsible for regulating the flow of salt and fluids in and out of the cells in different parts of...
