PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT IN COMPUTER SCIENCE
Professional conduct in computer science that deals with the practical philosophy concerned with how computing professionals should make regarding professional and cultural ethics.
Professional conduct or professional ethics in the field of computer science may sound confusing but it’s really not. So let’s see why we needed these computer ethics or professional conduct in the first place.
In the field of computer science there are two common issues:
1. Intellectual Property Rights.
2. Privacy right.
Though computers have added greatly to our lives they have also added a lot of confusion on how they should and shouldn’t be used.
QUESTION?
Is it Ethical to take something just because you can acess it? Should employers be able to monitor employees Emails?
With all this confusion how can you make sure you use computers in an Ethical Way?
To understand this you can google “Ramon C Barquin from computer ethics institute created 10 commandments of computer ethics”
Some of them are
Do not use a computer to harm other people.
Do not interfere with other people's computer work.
Do not use a computer to steal.
Do not copy or use proprietary software for which you have not paid (without permission). And others
PROBLEMS
An ethical problem occur mostly when there is difference of judgment or prospect about what constitutes the situation of affairs or a proper course of action. The engineer may face with contrary opinions from within the firm, from the client, from other firms within the, industry. A person makes ethical decisions, in his/her capability as a member of different groups. In order to make ethical decisions, an engineer interacts in many orders and within many diverse contexts, each of which can show the actual situation in a different light. For example, solving the problem on individual – colleagues – management could lead to certain choices, which e.g. do not necessarily agree with the views of his/her own family or friends, or industry.
CONCLUSION
The rising value of computers in modern society makes Computer Ethics necessary both when it comes to the issues related to the profession such as safety, security, quality, and similar and also in the everyday use of computers which gives rise to many ethical dilemmas. Professional conduct or professional ethics in the field of computer science helps increasing the ability of concerned engineers, to first be familiar with and then sensibly confront moral issues raised by technological activity. The goal is to encourage moral autonomy, i.e. the skill and habit of thinking sensibly on ethical issues.
NOTE*
And yeah talking about public speaking it is like mathematics or playing the piano. The only way to really learn it is by doing it / practicing it -- by speaking in public.
