This question is for my last discussion topic in Math225N - Statistical Reasoning for the Health Sciences at Chamberlain. We rely heavily on statistics and statistical research in the health and helping professions. The outcomes from this work help us identify the best methods for helping and caring for clients and patients. Discuss at least two concepts from the course that you can use in your future career. Be sure to state the concept, how you would use it, and why that approach would be the best approach for the situation.

Solutions

Expert Solution

(1) Concept: Data Reduction and Analysis of large mass of data available in hospital records that can be used for future decisions.

For example, for occupancy of the various inpatient rooms, data is to collected and classified and statistically analyzed to categorize the rooms of most demand to rooms of least demand.

The statistical analysis includes; Frequency Distributions, Central Tendency, Dispersion, graphical methods such as bar chart, pie chart etc,

Such a study will be a useful input in future expansion program of the hospital.

(2) Concept: Hypothesis Testing on the effectiveness of a new treatment in curing a specific disease.

For example, as part of medical research, a particular treatment is proposed a team of doctors which can cure the patient suffering from a disease more easily than then the existing techniques, the Hypothesis Testing can be employed in order to give a scientific confirmation on its utility based on actual data collection and statistical analysis.

The Scientific Method and Statistical Reasoning Using the tools of the scientific method and understanding statistical reasoning can strengthen our critical thinking. Answer two of the following questions to explore these issues: What misconceptions often rise around the idea of a scientific “theory”? What are the characteristics of good scientific theories? Where have you seen statistical data (or charts or graphs) used in a way that obscures critical thinking? Describe the issues and how you might correct these.

Discussion Topic 2: There have been major controversies in the last several years about vaccinations. Are they bad? Are they good? Do they cause things like autism?
