Enrolled nurse in a hospital sector works under the supervision of the registered nurse. They have less authority. Enrolled nurse are directed to report under RN. The basic responsibilities of EN are : performing basic patient care, wound care, administering medications, intravenous fluid management. Enrolled nurses should follow practice of standards and they must understand their limitations and boundaries. They can work either under direct/ indirect supervision of the Registered nurse. Direct supervision includes performing procedure under the presence of RN. Indirect supervision in which the supervisor/RN present in the same institution mean while the presence is not needed during a procedure. But in indirect supervision the RN can oversee the procedure at any time.
Work role boundaries refers to the description of individuals role,responsibilities,limitations in an organization. As a enrolled nurse by understanding the limitations of the function the EN can improve her efficiency and performance in rendering quality patient care. To improve the performance EN must gain knowledge and practical skills from the registered nurse. This drives the EN from novice to a competent stage.
EN must aid RN in certain daily routines like : observing and assessing the patients symptoms, creating plans for patient care, recording and reporting patient care, integration with the other health personnel, leadership skills, handling medical equipment, rendering first aid care, communication skills, handling emergency. By observing all above skills helps EN to do their higher studies and to get credentials as RN.
