Calculate the theoretical Iodine Number of tristearin, triolein, trilinolein and trilinolenin, if their molar masses are 891 g/mol, 885 g/mol, 879 g/mol and 873 g/mol, respectively. The molar mass of iodine (I2) is 254 g/mol.

Solutions

Expert Solution

iodine number is the mass of iodine in grams that is consumed by 100 grams of a chemical substance.(a C=C double bond consume a iodine)

a) in  tristearin their is no C=C double bond so it dosnot consume ant iodine.

b) in triolein their is three C=C double bond so consumed three iodine.

1 mole of triolein consume 3 mole of iodine.

1 mole of triolein consume =127 x 3 grame of iodin.

=381 gram

885 g of triolein consume 381 gram of iodin.

100 g of triolein consume =(381 ÷885) x 100 =43.05

c) in trilinolein their is six C=C double bond so consumed six iodine.

1 mole of trilinolein consume 6 mole of iodine.

1 mole of trilinolein consume =127 x 6 grame of iodin.

=762 gram

879 g of trilinolein consume 762 gram of iodin.

100 g of trilinolein consume =(762 ÷879 ) x 100 =85.5

d) in trilinolenin their is nine C=C double bond so consumed nine iodine.

1 mole of trilinolenin consume 9 mole of iodine.

1 mole of trilinolenin consume =127 x 9 grame of iodin.

=1143 gram

873 g of trilinolenin consume 1143 gram of iodin.

100 g of trilinolenin consume =(1143 ÷873) x 100 =130.9

a) Calculate the theoretical yield of your product. The theoretical yield should be quoted as a mass, not a number of moles. Units must be shown on all numbers that need them. Calculations that are done with an incorrect number of significant figures will be counted as incorrect. Your work must be shown. b) Calculate the percent yield for your product.
