Accoridng to the Genderlect styles developed by linguist Deborah Tannen, there are two different patterns of communication styles used by males and females:

Rapport conversation style is traditionally used by women wherein the conversation is directed towards building relationships.
Report conversation style is traditionally used by men wherein the speaker attempts to gain affection, exchange information and win arguments.

In my view, our culture should make any attempts in eradicating these differences. They merely reflect the fact that males and females use varying forms of communication patterns and this diversity should be retained and appreciated.
