Answer all questions in a single post:
Who do you think should be on your reference list and maybe who should not be? Why?
Why is creating a portfolio to accompany your resume effective?
What are some of the elements that should belong in your portfolio?
Answer: The best way to create a reference list which contains the names of people with whom you have worked earlier. Apart from them if there are some professionals related with the field that have seen your work but not worked with you may also be cited as references.
Mostly the people (particularly the supervisors) who have worked with an individual should be provided as references as they only know about the professional competencies of the individuals. Family members should not be on the reference list as they are less likely to provide a right feedback because of the personal relationships.
Portfolio provides evidence about one’s abilities to the interviewers. While resume and the cover letters are mere piece of basic information, portfolio provides information about the accomplishments, skills and achievements of the individuals. Thus without it the resume is not effective as the interviewers are more interested in accomplishments and achievements of the candidates rather than their personal information alone.
Some of the elements which should be contained in the portfolio are
