Do you believe cultures are irreconcilably different? Or is it that deep down people are people and we’re really all the same? How does this distinction relate to the difference between cultural relativism and traditional theories of ethics?
Cultures are different but not irreconcilably different. With each community having different norms and practices, there are some differences in values and beliefs which make cultures have very wide rift in most cases. However, the aspect of cultures being irreconcilably different is just a misconception.
The difference between cultures brings about the aspect of different values and norms which bring about ethics. Since ethics is a code of conduct, different communities have different value which are considered right and wrong depending on the motive. The theories of ethics in traditional approach rely on cultural values which are different hence bringing the concept of wide variations.
Write down some factors leading to a significant decision you’ve made. It could be about choosing a field of study or a career path. Now, can you walk through each of the factors within the eternal return? Are there any decisions you made that you’d take back and change?
The main things which I have made based on personal decisions include purchase of personal assets, choice of friends, my choice in relation to studies and religious affiliation. My choice of friends is based on the value of return in terms of right company, motivation and moving in same direction. My choice of purchase of assets is based on value of returns, the level of risk and quality in long run. My choice of studies and course is based on ambitions, passion and abilities. Most of the decisions I have made are very I am very okay with them, hence not cases of regret or turning back.
If you’re doing business overseas as a cultural ethicist, why would it make sense to consult the local chamber of commerce? Who else might you consult for moral guidance? Why?
It would make sense to consult the local chamber of commerce despite being a cultural ethicist. This is because, commerce is based on qualitative and quantitative information and facts. The process of consulting gives a lot of information and facts to factor into. Consultation for moral guidance would be sought from local religious leaders because they have experience and information which is relevant.
A cultural ethics is neither true nor false. Explain.
It is very true that cultural ethics is neither true nor false. This is because, ethics are based on the values and morals of the society. Some practices which is viewed as good in one community may be viewed negatively in another community hence basis is in the societal standards. The truth of the cultural ethics hence can only be judged by the existing community and not universal truth.
Imagine that you had two parents and a sister working for Oil-Drill in the United States. The overseas client you’ve been sent to do business with is a half-brother from your father’s first marriage. He demands a bribe. How could the ethics of care be used to justify accepting or refusing?
The aspect of asking for a bribe can be said to be unethical. It should not be accepted. Asking for bribe is compromising the aspect and virtue of integrity and honesty. The giver and the receiver of the bribe are both guilt of the action of giving out financial kick-back to have their interests met. The practice makes the value of being true and loyal to be jeopardized. It is unethical to give or receive bribe, hence should not be done.
