Define multipotent stem cells. b. What role does VCAMI play in maintaining NSCs?
Multipotent stem cells are cells that have the ability of self renewal by dividing and developing into specialized cells of multiple types that re present in specific tissue or organ. Example of multipotent stem cells are adult stem cells.
VCAM1 (Vascular cellular adhesion molecule 1) is a cell adhesion molecule. It functions to adhere Neural stem cells (NSCs) in the ependymal niche. VCAM1 is responsible for the activation of NOX2 that generates the required amount of Reactive Oxygen Species needed for maintenance of neural stem cells. VCAM1 responds to humoral factors such as IL-1B and acts as a environmental sensor of neural stem cells. If VCAM1 is blocked, it will lead to activation of quiescent neural stem cells, leading to their proliferation and neurogenesis.
