Why is osmosis important in human physiology? What role does it play in helping the human body function?
Answer:- Osmosis is the type of diffusion where the movement of water from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration occurs through a semipermeable membrane which allow transport of only specific solute across it.
Osmosis is an important process in human physiology. Cells have semipermeable membranes, and osmosis balances the pressure and concentration of solution on both sides of a semi-permeable membrane by making water molecules move from the high-concentration side to the low concentration side thus ensures a balance of fluid volume on both sides of the cell. Such volume balance is important for physiological cell functions.
Role of osmosis in helping the human body are enlisted as below:
-The one of the important role of osmosis that help human body function is stabilising the internal environment of body by keeping the water and intercellular fluids levels balanced.
-In human body, nutrients and minerals make their way to the cells because of osmosis.
-Besides carrying nutrient-rich liquid across cell membranes, osmosis helps to maintain an ideal concentration of solute within the cell.
-Cells get rid of their waste by osmosis. For example, in the kidneys, bloodstream get rid from metabolic waste products.
