Apgar score was first created by Dr. Virginia Apgar in 1952.
Apgar is scoring system that doctors and nurses use to measure the health of newborns one minute and five minutes after they're born.
Apgar stands for-
Appearance
Pulse
Grimace
Activity
Respiration.
Apgar scores are between 0 to 10. Ten is highest score possible.
In case of heart beats-
Apgar score 0 means no heart rate.
Apgar score 100 beats/ min. means baby is not very responsive.
Apgar score more than 100 beats/ min means baby is vigorous.
In case of respiration-
Apgar score 0 means no breathing.
Apgar score 1 means weak cry.
Apgar score 2 means good, strong cry.
In case of muscle tone-
Apgar score 0 means limp.
Apgar score 1 means some bending of arms and legs.
Apgar score 2 means Active motion.
In case of reflex action-
Apgar score 0 means no response to airways being stimulated.
Apgar score 1 means grimace during stimulation.
Apgar score 2 means grimace and cough or sneeze during stimulation.
In case of colour-
Apgar score 0 means baby's body is blue or pale in colour.
Apgar score 1 means baby is good colour in body but with blue hands or feet.
Apgar score 2 means baby's body is pink or good colour.
