a.  citric acid cycle

b. oxidative phosphorylation

Give AT LEAST THREE MAIN points. please be as much detailed and precise as you can.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The citric acid cycle uses the pyruvate from glycolysis and converts it into carbon dioxide.

It is composed of 8 steps

1 First, the acetyl CoA joins with oxaloacetate to form citrate.

2 The citrate is then converted to isocitrate

3 Isocitrate is then oxidized to alpha-ketoglutarate which results in the release of carbon dioxide. In this step 1 NADH molecule is formed The The enzyme responsible for catalyzing this step is isocitrate dehydrogenase.

4 Here alpha-ketoglutarate is oxidized to form a 4 carbon molecule that picks up coenzyme A forming succinyl CoA. This step also forms an NADH molecule

5 Succinyl CoA is then converted to succinate and one GTP molecule is produced.

6 Succinate is converted into fumarate and a molecule of FADH₂ is produced.

7 Fumarate is converted to malate.

8 Malate is then converted into oxaloacetate and NADH is also produced here.

At the end of 1 TCA cycle 2 CO2, 3 NADH, 1 FADH2, and 1 GTP is formed.
