Eclectic therapy is an open, integrative form of psychotherapy that adapts to the unique needs of each specific client,depending on the problem ,the treatment goals and the person's expectation and motivation. In this type of therapy clinician uses more than one theoretical approach or multiple sets of techniques to help with clients needs.
Basically, eclectic therapy means adapting the therapeutic approach to the clients specific needs .Those clinicians who are specialized in cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy commonly use an eclectic approach whenever it provides advantage.
Still there are some reasons because of which eclectic interventions are not considered as very effective;
(1) Eclectic approach does not lend itself to predictions and control of behaviour.
(2) It's difficult to identify the relative contribution of each approach.
(3) When different therapies are combined for intervention , the problematic behavior cannot be explained properly.
(4)There are practical difficulties in investigating the integration of the approaches.
(5) Eclectic approach is sometimes too complex for one clinician to manage.
(5)Use of eclectic approach leads to confusing explanations of behavior.
(6) It requires more skilled therapists to handle the dynamic feature of eclectic approach.
