Select True or False for the following statements about electromagnetic waves.

True False  A vertical automobile antenna is sensitive to electric fields polarized horizontally.
True False  The Earth's atmosphere is quite transparent to infrared radiation.
True False  Gamma rays can be produced through electrons oscillating in wires of electric circuits.
True False  Radio waves have wavelengths longer than 1 m.
True False  X-rays are produced by a glowing light bulb.
True False  Blue light has a longer wavelength than red.
True False  The sun's radiation is most intense in the visible region.

Solutions

Expert Solution

False: vertical antennas are sensitive to vertically polarized waves, while horizontal antennas are sensitive to horizontally polarized waves.

False: nitrogen and oxygen are transparent to IR radiation, but there are other gasses in the atmosphere which aren't, the most important are water vapor and carbon dioxide. These are known as greenhouse gasses, because by absorbing the IR radiation they trap the heat and make the earth warmer.

False: gamma rays are only produced in the decay of certain atomic nucleus (of the so called radioactive elements) and in the desintegration of subatomic particles.

False: radio waves wavelength ranges from 1mm to 100km according to NASA

False: heated filaments are used as a part of the apparatus because they emmit electrons, but then this electrons must be accelerated by a very large voltage to gain speed, then this high speed electrons are targeted at a metal and the sudden desceleration upon collision is what produces the X rays.

False: blue color light has shorter wavelength than red, blue ranges between 450 and 490 nm while red ranges between 635 and 700 nm

False: the intensity of the radiation is directly proportional to the frequency, and above the visible region there's the UV solar spectrum with higher frequencies, wich can cause damage if the exposure is not controled.
