Which statement is true?

a.) the ETC is directly coupled to ATP synthesis in the mitochondria

b.) Cyt b6f is not involved in proton pumping in the mitochondria

c.) the ETC pumps protons into the matrix to form a proton gradient

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer =

Statement true is :

a.) the ETC is directly coupled to ATP synthesis in the mitochondria = The free energy derived from the passage of electrons through complexes I,II and IV is coupled to the synthesis of ATP.

As H+ ions flow down their gradient and back into the matrix, they pass through an enzyme called as ATP synthase, there is formation of ATP.

INCORRECT OPTIONS:

c.) the ETC pumps protons into the matrix to form a proton gradient = The NADH and FADH2 which are formed from TCA cycle enter into ETC. during ETC the energy which is obtained through the transfer of electrons down the electron transport chain is used to pump protons from mitochondrial matrix into the intermembrane space, across the inner membrane of mitochondria, therefore there is generation of electrochemical proton gradient.

this statement is incorrect because: when protons are enter from matrix into intermembrane space then there is generation of electrochemical proton gradient.

b.) Cyt b6f is not involved in proton pumping in the mitochondria
