The synthesis of ATP by photophosphorylation depends on a pair of coupled reactions. One involves an electron transport chain and the second involves ATP synthase. Describe the first coupled reaction that involves an electron transport chain. Which process and/or reaction is exergonic and which is endergonic?

Solutions

Expert Solution

An electron tranport chain is a series of complexes which involves electron transfer from donor to acceptor via redox reactions and also couples with transfer of protons across the membrane thus creating a concentration gradient. The flow of electrons through the electron transport chain is highly exergonic. The electro chemical gradient created then drives the synthesis of ATP by ATP synthase.
In photophosphorylation, the energy of sunlight is used to create a high-energy electron donor which can reduce redox active components. The photosynthetic transport chain is like mitochondrial chain in this they use mobile, lipid-soluble quinone carriers (phylloquinone and plastoquinone) and mobile, water-soluble carriers (cytochromes, electron transport chain.). They also contain a proton pump. The proton pump in all photosynthetic chains resembles mitochondrial Complex III.
