How is the EHR changing the roles of the HIM staff? Do you feel these are positive or negative changes? Why or why not?
What changes would you expect from the centralization of HIM functions and why?
What is your view of the HIM profession as a whole? Why?
Ans: The health information management (HIM) profession is changing rapidly alongside the evolving needs of healthcare organizations concerned about the quality of their EHR data – and their ability to safeguard that data with an appropriate level of privacy and security. There is a positive changes because many of the work burden will be low due to the EHR, all the health records will be entered in that and it will be better option to save files and records. There will be a safegaurd of the privacy etc.
There should be many changes in the HIM fuctionsuch as cleaning of the data With the centralization of HIM, it is expected that HIM staffs will be able perform duties in HIM departments within different facilities. This will maximize efficiency and increase production level. In addition, to this, there will be more opportunities to cross train and promote development of internal staff. With doing so employees who are vital to the company will be able to continue to be a valuable asset due to retention of these employees. The most critical change I think that will occur with centralization cleaning up of data. This will improve the quality of information while meeting the standards and integrity are required.
I believe the role of HIM professions are vital to the upkeeping of patient’s information. HIM played an important role in protecting the quality and privacy of patient records. While HIM is important to ensure that a patient information is protected, HIM also ensure that standardization is practice throughout the workplace. With the advancement of EHR, HIM is playing a essential role in helping the medical practices adopt to electronic health records and safe keeping.
