An expansion tank is a necessity in a chilled water cooling network because:

  1. The network is a closed loop system
  2. It allows for the variation in temperature of chilled water in the chilled water circuit
  3. Both A & B
  4. None of the above

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans. We know that domestic refrigerator and chiller used to cool water ( chilled water cooling network ) works on simple vapour compresion refrigeration cycle.

It consists of following components:

1. Evaporator

2. Compressor

3. Condenser

4. Expansion device

In this mainly four process occurs :

Process 1-2- Reversible adiabatic compresion

Process 2-3- Constant pressure heat rejection

Process 3-4- irreversible expansion (throttling)

Process 4-1- constant pressure heat addition.

In expansion process refrigerant which is expanded isentropically in the expansion tank must be cool enough to absorb heat from surrounding. So it is desired to provide expansion tank in chilled water cooling network.

This will allow expansion and then following with heat addition to complete one cycle.

Hence the network is a closed loop system.

It allows for variation in temperature of chilled water in the chilled water circuit due to a process of heat addition we control the temperature of chilled water circuit. Also expansion tank is necessary in vapour compresion refrigeration system. Generally throttle expansion is performed due to its very simple and cheap cost.

We can also use capillary tubes, constant pressure expansion valve, thermostatic expansion valve as desired.

Hence Option C is correct.

Option a & b alone are incorrect because these two statement are true for chilled water circuit.

Rigid tank A and tank B (containing water) are connected to a piston cylinder with two valves as shown below. The piston cylinder assembly is initially (state 1) empty when the valves are closed. The pressure required to float the piston is 800kPa, the piston is constantly loaded and is free to move. Now the valves are opened and the fluid reaches a uniform state at 250C within the system (state 2). Determine: (a) The final volume (5 points) (b)...

A closed, rigid tank is filled with water. Initially, the tank holds 0.6 lb of saturated vapor and 6.0 lb of saturated liquid, each at 212°F. The water is heated until the tank contains only saturated vapor. Kinetic and potential energy effects can be ignored. Determine the volume of the tank, in ft3, the temperature at the final state, in °F, and the heat transfer, in Btu.

1.Water samples were taken from water used for cooling as it was being discharged from a power plant into a river. It has been determined that as long as the mean temperature of the discharged water is at most 150 F, there will be no negative impact on the river's ecosystem. To investigate whether a plant is in compliance with regulations that prohibit a mean discharge water temperature above 150 F, researchers took 50 water samples at randomly selected times...

In large buildings, hot water in a water tank is circulated through a loop so that the user doesn’t have to wait for all the water in long piping to drain before hot water starts coming out. A certain recirculating loop involves 300-foot-long, 1-inch--diameter PEX pipes with six 90° threaded smooth bends and two fully open gate valves. The PEX piping is considered to be smooth (roughness is 0). If the average flow velocity through the loop is 5 ft/s,...
