3. Ethanol can be produced by the fermentation of glucose in the presence of yeast according to the following chemical reaction:

C6H12O6 -----> 2C2H5OH+2CO2

The feed to the fermenter (not the fresh feed) is 130 mol/s and is 88.1mol% glucose and 11.9 mol% yeast (consider the yeast to be a non-consumable catalyst). The single pass conversion of glucose is 18.6%. The mixed stream exiting the fermenter is passed through a separator that produces a CO2 stream and an ethanol product stream and a third stream containing the remaining glucose and yeast. 5.67% of the third (glucose/yeast) stream is purged from the process while the rest is recycled to the fermenter feed.

Glucose percentage in the waste= 100*93.23/108.70=85.78%

5.67% of this is purge and rest is recycled, Purged= 108.7*5.67/100 =6.123 mol/s

Recycled = 108.70- 6.123=102.577 mol/s

Glucose in the recycle= 102.577*85.78/100=88 mol/s

Balance is yeast= 102.577- 88= 15.477 mol/s

Feed entering the reactor = Fresh feed + Recycle

Recycle = 102.577 mol/s

130 = Fresh feed + 102.577

Fresh feed= 130-102.577= 27.423 mol/s

Glucose entering the reactor= Glucose in the fresh feed + glucose in the recycle

114.53= 88+ Glucose in the Fresh feed

Glucose in the fresh feed = 114.53-88 =26.53 mol/s

Yeast= Fresh Feed- Glucose in the feed = 27.423- 26.530=0.893 mol/s

26.53 mol/s of glucose upon 100% conversion gives 2*26.53 mol/s of ethanol =53.06 mol/s

Ethanol actually produced= 42.6 mole/s

Percent conversion = 100*42.6/53.06=79.27%
