The exit stream of a beer fermentation system (F) contains ethanol, water and fermentation solids and has a mass flow of 1200 ton/day. This stream is fed to a separator from which has to outlets: a stream of 300 ton/day of solids (S) and a stream (A) that is fed to a distillation column. From the top of the column, a flow of 750 ton/day of beer containing 12.5% ethanol and the balance of water is released; the bottom flow contains water with 1% of solids. The beer contains 96% of the ethanol fed to the process.

a) Draw a process diagram.

b) What is the composition of stream F, in mass percentages?

c) Find the mass flow in kg/h and composition the stream (A) entering the distillation column.

Solutions

Expert Solution

in terms of kg/hr the composition of atream a is (converting ton/day into kg/hr we use relation 1ton =10^3 kg and 1 day=24hr)

ethanol=4068.75kg/hr

water=33368.7378kg/hr

solids=62.5kg/hr

After fermentation, a mixture of ethanol and water is sent to a small distillation column. At the top of the distillation column, a 95% ethanol solution at 65°C is produced at a flow rate of 3.5 kg/s. Your job is to design a double-pipe heat exchanger that will cool the 95% ethanol mixture to 40°C by using cooling water that is available at 10°C. Assume an outlet temperature of the cooling water of 55°C, and only use Schedule 40 pipe...

Fresh orange juice contains 12.0 wt% solids and the balance water is fed to an evaporator for concentration process. The juice that enters the evaporator is concentrated to 58 wt% solids. However, the volatile constituent of the juice somehow can escape with the water, leaving the concentrate with a flat taste. It is suggested for the stream of fresh orange juice to by-pass the evaporator at certain fraction and mixed with the evaporator product stream to achieve the desired final...

Air at 90.0°C and 1.0 atm (absolute) contains 7.0 mole% water. A continuous stream of this air enters a compressor–condenser, in which the temperature is lowered to 18.6°C and the pressure is raised to 2.90 atm. The air leaving the condenser is then heated isobarically to 90.0°C.
