* Symptom experience

* Assumption of the sick role

* Medical care contact

* Dependent patient

* Decovery or rehabilitation

Natural illness:

A natural illness is a result of a physical cause, such as infection, disease, weather, and other environmental factors.

Treatments of natural illnesses emphasize the uses of herbs, barks, teas, and similar natural substances.

ASTHMA

Asthma is a common long-term condition

that can cause

coughing,

wheezing,

chest tightness

and breathlessness.

Asthma is caused by inflammation of the small tubes, called bronchi, which carry air in and out of the lungs.

Medications

Bronchodilators :

are a type of medication that make breathing easier by relaxing the muscles in the lungs and widening the airways (bronchi).

Example :

Ipratropium Inhalation Solution:

It is used to open the airways in lung disease.

Steroids:

Prednisone is an oral steroid medication.

Oral prednisone is a systemic anti-inflammatory steroid. Prednisone reduce symptoms such as swelling and allergic-type reactions.

Medications

medications are used to cure a disease or condition.

medication (also referred to as medicine, pharmaceutical drug, or simply drug) is a drug used to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent disease.

For example

antibiotics are given to cure an infection.

Lithium was discovered in the 19th century for nervous disorders and its possible mood-stabilizing or prophylactic effect.

Premarin (conjugated estrogens, introduced in 1942) and Prempro (a combination estrogen-progestin pill, introduced in 1995) dominated the hormone replacement therapy.

other drugs emerged including :

corticosteroids for inflammation,

rauvolfia alkaloids as tranqulizers

and antihypertensives,

antihistamines for nasal allergies,

xanthines for asthma,

and typical antipsychotics for psychosis.

Wellness :

Wellness is the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to attain better physical and mental health outcomes.

Importance of wellness:

Wellness is especially important as we age because regular exercise and proper nutrition can help prevent a variety of ailments including cardiovascular disease, obesity, and fall risk behaviors.

Additionally, the need for vitamins and minerals increases after age 50, so it's ever important to have a healthy diet.

The Seven Dimensions of Wellness

Physical.

Emotional.

Intellectual.

Social.

Spiritual.

Environmental.

Occupational.

Wellness is a holistic integration of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, fueling the body, engaging the mind, and nurturing the spirit.

Disease prevention :

Disease prevention is a procedure through which individuals, particularly those with risk factors for a disease, are treated in order to prevent a disease from occurring.

Treatment normally begins either before signs and symptoms of the disease occur, or shortly thereafter.

The three levels of preventive care

Primary Prevention.

Primary prevention aims to avoid the development of a disease or disability in healthy individuals.

Secondary Prevention.

Trying to detect a disease early and prevent it from getting worse.

Tertiary Prevention.

Trying to improve your quality of life and reduce the symptoms of a disease you already have.

Example:

Prevention of hypertension:

To help manage your blood pressure, you should limit the amount of sodium (salt) that you eat and increase the amount of potassium in your diet.

It is also important to eat foods that are lower in fat, as well as plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains

prevention of heart failure:

Regular physical activity (exercising ≥5 d/wk) and maintaining a health body weight are key ingredients to preventing heart failure.

Other healthy behaviors also lower the risk of developing heart failure: not smoking, eating fruits and vegetables (4 servings/d)

and moderate alcohol intake (1 drink/d).

Prevention is better than cure :

It is better to stop something bad from happening than it is to deal with it after it has happened.

Diabetes mellitus:

Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a person's blood glucose (sugar) level to become too high.

Symptoms of diabetes:

The main symptoms of diabetes are:

feeling very thirsty

urinating more frequently than usual, particularly at night

feeling very tired

weight loss and loss of muscle bulk

cuts or wounds that heal slowly

blurred vision

There are three main types of diabetes:

– type 1

type 2

gestational.

prevent of type 2 diabetes:

Losing weight and keeping it off.

Following a healthy eating plan.

Get regular exercise.

Don't smoke.

treatment for diabetes:

Metformin is generally the preferred initial medication for treating type 2 diabetes. Metformin is effective, safe, and inexpensive. It may reduce the risk of cardiovascular events
