Jehovah’s Witness wellness:

They avoid eating foods with blood and can consume animal flesh in which blood is removed. They perform daily prayers in order to maintain mental comfort. They exercise to maintain their health although they discourage to participate in sports activities.

Nursing intervention such as  education about to consumption iron rich diet and safe exercise if they practice safe exercise. Because if they exercise there is a chance of trauma, bleeding may occur. So nurse must give importance and encourge them regarding the safe exercise and good nutritious diet.

Prevention of disease:

They discourage exercise and participate in exercise rather than prohibit the exercise and they chance to have anemia because of restriction of administration of blood in all cases. Individual decision may vary according to disease and choices of treatment except only blood products and blood contain diet. people who are chance to have anemia are children, pregnancy, hook worm infesttations, inherited bleeding disorder

Jehovah witness can practice some of the prevention methods such as

· hygiene practices: good hygiene can maintain health

· Maintain nutritious diet practices such as iron diet and vitamin such as vitamin K, vitamin C helps them to prevent anemia. Because they are reluctant to administer blood transfusion

· Get good water supply: good adequate water supply help them prevent many disease

· Exercise : moderate exercise can help them fit and healthy

· Sleep: adequate amount of sleep

Main nursing intervention is to care for anemia and trauma. Nurse can teach them to maintain safe health by means of exercise, iron rich diet. nurse can identify risky individuals,  screen them and treat them accordingly

Jehovah’s Witness illness

Illness: Jehovah community accepts medical treatment and surgical treatment. But they never accept blood transfusion. They accept the albumin and other forms of erythropoietin   that contains albumin in case of surgery and emergency situations

                    Jehovah’s Witness are well known for avoiding blood transfusion even it is their own blood in case of anemia. If they get blood transfusion, they may be removed from their community. Some minority accepts blood transfusion because they think that bible may not provide information regarding avoiding blood transfusion.

        In case of surgery, the Jehovah’s Witness give no consent for blood transfusion; it may be difficult for the doctor to treat the patient. Because surgery could not be operated without the blood transfusion. If he does and transfuse blood to the patient, it might cause breach of contract for the doctor. The physician may choose the some other option to treat anemia

If the patient is not able to give consent in case of illness, consent is received from the patients’ spouse incase of any illness. According to advance directives, the spouse, son, daughter, guardian may take decision regarding the patient conditions. It is important for the healthcare provider respect the patient’s decision and finds some other option and proceeds the care

In case of children, the health care provider can take decision regarding the patient care under the children act and court order and children interest take immediate precaution in case of illness in order to save the children. The children who is capable to understand and over 12 years of age, may give consent

They might suffer from bleeding in case of trauma, anemia. Nurse can protect the patient by means of compressing the bleeding point in case of bleeding and provide them high nutritious diet which include folic acid, vitamin b12, vitamin c.nurse try to control bleeding by means of pressure and use of desmopressin, vitamin k, tranxemic acid in case of clotting disorders, maintain oxygen support, maintain intravascular volume by means of fluid administration, diet therapy, medication such as folic acid, vitamin b12 in case of anemia, applying direct pressure and elevating arms and legs in case of external bleeding, tourniquet.

Medications:

Blood less medicine and surgery: They accepts genetically engineered protein which induce production of red blood cells, white blood cells

Volume expander s and some drugs: they accept dextran, hydroxyl starch, antifibrinolytics medication and non blood volume expanders

Use of alcohol and narcotics, medications: taking narcotics, medication is depending upon the individual decision. They accept moderate use of alcohol and beverages.

Nurse should respect the Jehovah community and try alternative medication instead of blood transfusion
