Midstream “clean catch”
specimen
This specimen provides a safer, less
traumatic method for obtaining urine for
bacterial culture. It also
offers a more representative and less contaminated
specimen for microscopic
analysis than the random specimen. Adequate
cleansing materials and a
sterile container must be provided for the patient.
The
procedure for the
collection of a “clean catch” urine is described below
in
section
Step 1
Patient preparation:
For Pregnant women
Step 2
. Wash
hands thoroughly before beginning the procedure and put on
disposable
gloves.
Step 3
Use betadine swabs or Hibiclens to cleanse the perineal area.
Step 4
Separate
the folds of the labia and wipe the betadine swab or Hibiclens
from
front to back (anterior to posterior) on one side, then discard
swab or
towelette.
Step 5
Using a
second betadine swab or Hibiclens, wipe the other side from front
to
back, then discard.
Step 6
Using a
third betadine swab or Hibiclens, wipe down the middle from front
to
back, then discard.
Step 7
Pat dry
periurethral area with clean dry gauze to remove excessive
betadine
while keeping the labia separated.
Note that it’s important to collect a urine sample midstream. This means that you should start urinating, then stop your flow. Place the collection container underneath your genital area and then release your urine flow again.
Steps for patients :
Before You Start...

Wash and dry your hands thoroughly.
Step 2
Remove the lid on the container and set it aside. Do Not touch the

voiding.
Step 4
Clean genital area with towelette prior to voiding
Step 5
Pass a small amount of urine into the toilet.
Step 6
Midway through urination, fill the container to half full.
Step 7
Finish voiding in the toilet.
Step 8
Replace the lid and tighten firmly.
Step 9
Wash and dry your hands thoroughly after collection.
Step 10
Label the container with the patient’s first and last name, MCP,
date of birth, and the date and time of collection of the
sample.
Step 11
For sanitary reasons, the container must be enclosed in a plastic
biohazard bag.
Refrigerate the urine sample IMMEDIATELY and deliver to the Laboratory as soon as possible after completion of the collection.
Urine refrigerated for more than 24 hours cannot be used for “Culture” or “C & S” and will be rejected by the Laboratory
The aim is to get a specimen (sample) of urine from the middle of your bladder. Urine is normally sterile (no bacteria present). If bacteria are found in the sample, it means that the urine is infected. A midstream sample is best as the first bit of urine that you pass may be contaminated with bacteria from the skin
