They were Republican political activist who switched from the Republican Party in support of Democratic candidate Grover Cleveland in the 1884 presidential election. They switched the party because Republican candidate James G. Blaine was involved in Financial Corruption. They opposed political Partnerships and corruption and encouraged honest government. In 1884, Republicans named James G. Blaine was chosen as the presidential candidate. Blaine had worked in a variety of political capacities during his career, and he was tainted by corruption. The publication of the Mulligan Letters proved that; Blaine has secretly received money from railway companies to vote on certain legislation. After these Mugwumps supported the Democratic candidate Grover Cleveland. Later the election was won by Grover Cleveland against James G. Blaine.
