Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disease that causes many cysts to grow inside the kidneys.

1. Etiology

2.pathophysiology

Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disorder of renal cyst formation causing gradual enlargement of both kidneys in form of cyst , sometimes with progression to renal failure. Almost all forms are caused by a familial genetic mutation. Characterized by flank and abdominal pain, hematuria, and hypertension accumulation of fluid-filled cysts in the kidney and other organs. ADPKD is caused by mutations of either the PKD1 gene on chromosome 16 or the PKD2 gene on chromosome 4

3.Treatment

• Treatments include medication to control blood pressure, pain relievers and cyst removal. A kidney transplant may also be required.
• Medications

ACE inhibitor : lowers blood pressure and prevents diabetes-related kidney damage.

• Low sodium diet
• A diet that restricts salt
• Hemodialysis-Using a machine and a special filter to clean the blood when the kidneys can no longer do it.
• Peritoneal dialysis-A home-based therapy that uses the natural lining of the abdomen as a filter to clean the blood when the kidneys can no longer do so.
• Renal replacement therapy-Using replacement treatments such as dialysis and haemofiltration to clean the blood when the kidneys can no longer do so naturally.
• Kidney transplantation-Surgical replacement of a diseased kidney with one from a living or deceased donor.
