4. Explain three distinct ways where clinical decision support can be used on the Computerised Physician Order Entry (CPOE) component of a Clinical Information System.
A clinical decision support system is a health information technology system that designed to provide physician's and other health professionals with clinical decision support that is assistance with clinical decision making tasks.
A computerized physician order entry has been defined as an electronic application used by physician's to order drugs ,laboratory tests,and requests for consultations,ensuring that all orders are legible and complete.
By requiring clinicians to directly enter orders online ,the CPOE system can virtually eliminate medical errors due to lost, incomplete or illegible orders. Moreover CPOE system can significantly improve professional practice through the integration of clinical decision support system.
It is an effective strategy to prevent the development of drug injury defined as an adverse drug event. Can prevent the errors while ordering administering and dispensing and monitoring. Clinical decision support encompasses a wide range of computerized tools directed at improving patient care, including computerized reminders and advice regarding drug selection,dosage,interaction, allergies, and the need for subsequent orders.
