1)Explain what is meant by a theory of mind.
2)How do we determine if children possess a theory of mind (i.e. what are some of the research techniques used?)
3)Why do you think possessing a theory of mind is important for humans?
Theory of mind suggests that human beings have the ability to understand and recognize the values, beliefs, knowledge and emotions of self and others. It is one of the most vital thing which helps one understand that people are different. It throws light in one's perspective by making them realize that it's not a good idea to expect others to think and behave like oneself. It helps one observe, measure and react to others' behaviors. Infants and people with mental disorders will struggle to exhibit this skill.
Children do have theory of mind but it is developed through different stages. At the beginning they are more self oriented and look to satisfy whatever they need. Later, they understand that sticking to their needs alone is selfishness and that they should respect others' opinions and actions and this normally occurs between the age 3 and 5. Children learn from the elders through observational learning and they treat adults as their models. It's because of their cognitive development that they don't understand the world around them initially.
Possessing a theory of mind is very important for the human beings as it is the source of social interaction. People who are open to differences of opinions easily understands that people are different. It helps people build very good rapport with others. It brings solidarity among people with different values, customs and ideologies. It would foster diversity and pluralism that would keep the peace in society.
