two pages paper on any topic related to HR and what you have learned and how you will take this knowledge into your future career.
In the course of HR, there has been three important topics that I have learned which could be put into practice in future. Those are detailed as under:
Leadership:
As a budding Business Administrator-Human Resources, I felt the Leadership topic was the most exciting. I realize I would have to perform as a Team leader the activities to guide and direct the subordinates. Accordingly, the Leadership topic in the course made me understand the Team leadership role in more efficient way. Moreover, in order to achieve the mission and vision statement of the Organization, it shall be essential to adapt to a Leaderships style that shall be most suitable to the Organizational goals.
Hence, take the cue from this course in the class, in future, I would like to lead in a way of which I can mould, direct and inspire others with a definite vision to realize the goals in smoother manner. Innovation shall also play an important part in case of good Leadership. I wish to be more Flexible in the approach to encourage Fairness, creativity, honesty, intelligence and courage within the team; all of this I have learnt in this leadership course.
I also learnt various styles of leadership as well as the team leadership role in the Leadership course. The Team Leadership Role needs to act as liaisons with external constituencies and serve as troubleshooters. The leader should also be able to manage the conflicts within the team mates and provide coaching to improve team member performance. Thus, In order to effectively lead teams, I learnt that the following are the four most critical elements for my leadership role in future:
· The mentoring role
· The role of self-leadership
· Implementation of ethical leadership
· Trust-building in relationships
This could have only been achieved by undertaking an appropriate Leadership course which I am glad I did. Also, when it comes to the leadership styles, this course shall help me in future to understand what styles to adapt to in a given situation to make the best use of the leadership skills.
According to me, the characteristics of the leadership that are most useful would be as under:
· Ambition and energy
· The desire to lead
· Honest and integrity
· Self-confidence
· Intelligence
· High self-monitoring
· Job-relevant knowledge
Prior to this HR course, my earlier model of Leadership was that of Laissez Faire style. Under this leadership style, the leadership would involve my future subordinates in the decision-making process. Although the overall responsibility would still rest upon me, the delegation of authority would still form a part of the leadership style. Communication could flow, both upwards and downwards. However, I realized that in the modern era, strictly adapting a particular leadership style shall not be enough. I need to adapt to various leadership approaches that suits a particular situation such a Democratic leadership style only when I solicit participation from the team members, or Autocratic only in the case where there the decision-making process is crucial and lacks time for implementation. Accordingly, I shall be more accepted in the team as an effective leader. Further, as a leader, I would also need proper feedback and reporting mechanism from the subordinates to take decisions regarding various issues. This shall only be possible when I encourage the subordinates not to blindly regard me as their Boss but also to come up frankly with issues that they are facing with their job so that I do not live in the world of fantasy that all is going on well with the team.
Training & Development:
I realized that in any business organization, a study of individuals as to how they react within a group helps to understand their behavior and thereby attempting to create a more efficient organization on the basis of such a study. The HRM course helps in applying various scientific theories to study these individuals working in a Corporate set-up in order to optimize the performance of overall human resource with the help of various activities such as Performance Appraisal or Training & Development. It further helps in understanding the work culture and the dominance of the Organizational values that may either boost or impede the growth and productivity of an Organization. In the areas of employee retention or training and development, skills sets requirements while conducting an effective recruitment, these strategies could in a way facilitate the predictability of the events by influencing the Organizational events.
Cultural Diversity:
I learnt that minds play a very important role in controlling our Organizational behavior. A health mind supports an individual to take better and sounder decisions that in turn could be advantageous to the organization. A poor health may have an adverse impact,
Also, it talks a lot about our mindset revolving around particular sets of ideologies as well that in turn helps in shaping the Organizational values on the part of the mindset. Some may be conservative in approach while some open and broad-minded. Diversity-conscious leaders in Company when formed on the basis of this mindset, becomes an identifying factor for the entire institution and this is how we can infer that there exists relationships between our minds and how we interact within Organizations. Accordingly, Psychometric tests is also used by these leaders as one of the important instruments in managing the diversity. The leaders of the Company also sort this help to deal with various other aspects of diversity such as gender diversity, age diversity, etc. These leaders have the competency to value the diversity in Organizational group dynamics as an internal source of strength since it provides a culture for inclusion of more and more people from different cultural backgrounds, age, gender, sexual orientation, marriage or religion belief. They therefore help in optimizing the employees’ potential to the best possible extent. Further, their competency involves the ability not only to form groups on certain basis but also to maintain the teams in order to facilitate the team’s performance towards achievement of the Organizational goals. These leaders assume accountability and undertake various effective decision-making processes that is essential in order to succeed in managing the team competency to boost the team’s overall performance. They also seek willing cooperation from their subordinates owing to their dynamic personality and hence they are charismatic extroverts.
In order to make a Transnational Organization, my HR role shall have a lot to do with the structural changes. It is based upon the basic values, mission and vision statements of the Organization that an HR designs the policies for the entire Organization to follow. If the Organization is a local one, without any global activities, then the HR role would be perhaps niche to only that particular home country however, when the structural changes involve the stepping up of the Company globally, then various other HR clauses come into the picture. It has to regard the host country’s domestic HR laws governing the state, the attitude and the perceptions of the employees residing in such other countries, etc. Hence HR role needs to be customized based on structural differences.
