The health illness continuum is a graphic illustration of well being concept first proposed by John W.Travis in 1972.

It describes how well being is more than simply an absence of illness but also incorporates the individual mental and emotional health.It composed of two arrows pointing in opposite direction and joined at a neutral point.

Movement to the right to the arrows (toward the high level of wellness) equals and increase level of health and well being.It comprises of three steps:

1) Awareness

2)Education

3)Growth

Movement to the left to arrows (toward the premature death ) equates a progressively decreasing state of health.It also has three steps:

1. Signs

2.Symptoms

3.Disability

Most important is the direction is the individual facing on the pathway-

a.If towards high level of health indicates a person has optimistic or positive outlook despite of her health status.

b.If towards premature death indicates a person has a pessimistic or negative outlook about his health status.
