WSIB is Workplace Safety & Insurance Board and is actually made for the support and insurance of workers who got injured on the job. In this case, the worker employed with a large grocery in the meat department got lacerations on his hands accidentally. He in entitled to several benefits as mentioned here under:
* Reimbursement of Earnings lost to the tune of 85% of their take home salary while recovering at home
* He is entitled for the full reimbursement of hospital expenses
* WSIB will provide a team of professionals to assist the worker to get back to work as soon as possible after he is fully recovered from the injury. The team normally consists of an adjudicator and a trained nurse.
Now, his manager plays an important role in persuading the worker to join back the work as soon as he is fully recovered but for that he has to facilitate certain things for the worker: Manager must take control of the incident and try to involve statting from the beginning like providing immediate first aid, calling emergency services/ambulance and getting him admitted in the hospital and informing WSIB. He must liaison with authorities of WSIB so that the entire claim process becomes smooth and worker does not get pressure in dealing with WSIB personnel. Once the worker feels comfortable and gets to know how his manager assisted him, he will try to cut short his resting recovery period so that he can join early. The manager should prepare a return-to-work program for the worker so that worker gets some ease in performing his duties. Manager can modify the job responsibility of the worker so as to avoid any further risk of further exposure to any possibility of injury. In order to prevent any future accident, the manager must do the following-
* conduct a risk assessment to determine any health and safety related hazard
* position all safety measures to prevent the worker(s) from getting injured
* provide health and safety related training programs on regular basis and explaining them do's and dont's in case of any emergency situation
* display some warning signs so that workers can become more alert in handling certain machines or areas which are more prone to accident
Therefore, if the manager handles the situation well and takes care of worker as per above mentioned points, he can surely convince the worker to return to work at the earliest.
