Affirmative action which is a by product of civil rights movement of 1960's are the policies adopted by institution or organisation to expand the opportunities given to the minority groups. Its objective is to increase the number of peoples participation in certain areas of education or employment. Through this the plan of government is to provide education to more number of people without focusing on their background. This kind of policy is mandatory to the proper and effective functioning of universities and public services. Now a days there are more number of people who are graduated and got benefits from affirmative action. They got good jobs and were able to earn money and improved their standard of living.
Affirmative action iradicated centuries of racial and socio- economic oppression.Although it was beneficial to the minority groups , this policy also lead to stigmatising and discrimination by peers and other faculties who oppose this policy. Due to grade point average system and norms for test scores the minority groups always tries to meet the lower requirement ie they will not try to attain the above average scores as they will get admission in any institution due to reservation and this will prohibit the opportunity of more efficient students. Affirmative actions are able to provide help to economically disadvantaged students as they benefit only middele and upper class minority.
States should give importance to other policies or programs that encourage equal opportunity for setting high expectations for all students and improving their college performance.
