How do protists reproduce sexually and asexually. What are the stages?
Ans:- Protists mainly reproduce through asexual methods but it can also reproduce through sexual means.
• Asexual reproduction in protists:-
It happens by many methods:
1.) Binary fission:- In binary fission single cell divide in two halves by mitosis and each grow into two individuals..
Eg:- Amoeba, Paramecium
2.) Budding:- In protists asexual reproduction occurs by forming small buds... These buds initially attach to parent plants and gradually separated and form a new individual.
Eg:- Arcella
3.) Multiple fission:- In this type individual cell divide into several daughter cells snd each cell form new individuals.
Eg:- Amoeba, Plasmodium
4.) Spore formation:- in some protists spores are formed. On germination each spore give an individual.
Eg:- Slime moulds
• These are main methods of asext reproduction in protists... In Opalina it occurs by PLASTOMOMY but it is not a common method...
•• Sexual Reproduction:-
Sexual reproduction involves formation of male and female gametes either by same or different sex.. It involved meiosis as chromosomes reduced to half in this process.
• There are mainly two methods of sexual reproduction in protists-
1.) Syngamy:- It invoves fusion of male and female gametes to form a diploid Zygote..
Eg:- Plasmodium , Mocystis
2.) Conjugation:- In this two individuals temporarily meet only to exchange their haploid Pronuclear to form a zygote nucleus... Each individual with zygote nucleus give daughter individuals by binary fission.
Eg:- Paramecium
