Q:
Some patients may be reluctant to participate in Telemedicine. Give some potential reasons for this reluctance. In your opinion, what are some effective methods that healthcare professionals could use to increase patients’ comfort level with Telemedicine?
Telemedicine is the delivery of health care via telecommunications at a distance without actually meeting the caregivers in person. This is one of the most advantageous innovations as it overcomes the barriers of distance and can be very helpful during emergencies and critical situations where medical help is not available especially in rural areas.
Although it has advantages people still find difficult to accept this because:
1)It mainly depends on phone calls, internet and data which might be unaffordable to some of the patients.
2) There is lack of proper human interaction which can affect the care.
3)Emergencies are mostly not managed properly due to lack of proper assessment which distances out the patients trust on this .
4)Telecommunications might take longer in terms of treatment as there can be obstacles in sharing information like reports, imaging etc which can likely cause delay in initiating the treatment. Hence, patients they to avoid them.
Effective methods to increase comfort levels with telemedicine are:
1)Focus more on patient centred care.
2) Exchange proper information.
3) Respond to the patients needs
4)Provide adequate information to remove uncertainties.
5)Involve the patient in the care to understand their needs.
6)Emphasize on the advantages of telemedicine in meeting the needs of the patient for a low cost highly effective care.
