Q:
Review the four workable ethical theories from Chapter 2.
Select two of the theories to use in this part.
Prepare a 1–2 page written response to the following items:
Apply one of the theories you selected to a moral dilemma/situation that you or someone you know has faced. What decision does this theory lead you to make regarding the dilemma?
Apply the second theory that you selected to the same moral problem. What decision does this theory lead you to make?
Explain the differences in your decisions, if any, which arose from applying two different ethical theories to the same moral problem.
For your information, these are the workable ethical theories:
– Kantianism
– Act and rule utilitarianism
– Social contract theory
– Virtue ethics
Moral dilemma- My friend got sick on a mountain treck and I had
to arrage for his medicine. There was one medical store at nearby
location but he asked for 10 times price. I did not have that much
money. I requested meica store but they did not agreed. Then i got
the plan to steal the medicine from store as shop was about to
close in the evening. Dilemma was whether to steal and save life or
not steal as is it is inherently an evil.
Theories.
Kantianism- Kantian theory aslo called as deontological theory
suggest that any action is morally right if it is performed
dutifully. Appropriate means must be followed irrespective of
consequences. As per this theory , I should not steal the medicine
because this will not be a morally correct thing to do ven if my
fiend dies due to unavailibility of medicine.
Utilitarianism- It states that an action is morally corrct only if
it produces maximum good for maximum no. of people. It focuses on
consequences of an action and not on means. As per this theory , I
should steal the medicine as it will not affect much to th
storekeeper but it can save life of friend, So overall, stealing
have more advantages thatn not stealling and letting friend
die.
As per kantianism, i should not steal while as per utilitarianism I
should steal the medicine and save life of my friend.
