As the project manager, you know it is important to get the project off to a good start. You are working with your project sponsor to decide on the optimal project management structure for this project. You are confident that either a dedicated project team structure or a matrix structure will work for the project, but the project sponsor thinks either will fail. Describe how you will reassure the project sponsor that either structure will be successful. Explain the pros and cons of each structure and how they support a large project.
A Thumbs Up! Would be really helpful for me. If you have any questions, please leave a comment and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Considering the fact that a dedicated team when is put together to work on a project turns out to be a project management structure. In this, the project manager makes sure that line management authority is followed for the team members. Moreover, while talking about matrix structure, this type of structure will be a successful one as this structure involves two types of manager i.e. one "team manager" and another "project manager", both having different responsibilities.
Advantages of project team structure:
-the entire team is focused on achieving the team's goal and fulfilling the loyalty for each other and project.
-basically, for big or large projects, the team should have a strong sense of identity that makes the structure easily workable.
Disadvantages of project team structure:
-having a team that is entirely focused on one project can be expensive which is affordable in case of large projects only.
-the dedicated team might end up just wasting the time and resources which can limit the number of projects which could have been accomplished with the same time and resources.
Advantages of matrix structure:
-resources are used effectively and efficiently and can be flexible as to when needed for large projects.
-it's easily flexible for the team and individuals to be responsive like when did new projects come the team can start working in on the project and as soon as it is accomplished the team can be divided as individuals work for the regular tasks.
Disadvantages of matrix structure:
-there can be a conflict between both managers who have different priorities searches for regular tasks for a particular project.
-there may be a conflict while sharing resources of the organization.
