The 5 entropy sources can be found in house can be:
- The compressors of Refrigerators and Air Conditioners.
- Way to reduce the entropy generation -
Properly insulate the exterior of the compressors so that heat does
not leak into the environment.
- Heat sinks of CPUs of Computers.
- Way to reduce the entropy generation - We
should make use of liquid cooling. And if using liquid cooling, we
should make use of smooth PVC pipes instead of rough pipes which
can induce pressure loss, thus leading to entropy generation. Also,
heat should not be released into the ambient, but instead, should
be carried off by a suitable refrigerant which has moderately high
boiling point.
- Gas burners for cooking.
- Way to reduce the entropy generation - These
burners cause a lot of entropy generation and are highly
inefficient. These should be replaced with induction cooking
systems which happen to cook the food, but mostly without an
appreciable temperature difference, thus causing less entropy
generation.
- Fireplace.
- Way to reduce the entropy generation - One of
the most inefficient techniques of heating the room. Causes a
tremendous amount of entropy rise. These should be:
- either replaced with other heat generation techniques such as
heat pumps.
- or walls made of heat retaining materials should be used around
these fire-places so that these walls can retain the wastage heat
which escapes from the chimneys and heat the room at a later stage
with lesser temperature gradient, thus reducing entropy
generation.
- Electrical appliances such as Tubelights, Fans, Mobile
Chargers, TVs, Computers, ACs which are plugged in and are switched
ON while there is no one in the room.
- Way to reduce the entropy generation - There
are two possible ways:
- Either make it a habit to not keep electrical appliances
switched ON while not in the room to avail their services. This can
be considered as non-boundary work (electrical power) done on the
system (room air), which increases the net entropy generation.
- Or Install sensors which sense the movement of humans in the
room, thereby shutting down those devices which are still switched
ON in the room, while there is no user inside.
